Burundi used to be a French colony. After WW2, the country, along with Rwanda, was ruled by Germans and the Belgians as a colony. During that time, the country followed most French laws. Even until the declaration of independence, gambling was legal in the country.

It was only in 2008 that all forms of gambling were deemed illegal according to the law. With a very low internet penetration rate, somehow, people from Burundi are participating in online gambling freely.

We’ve talked a bit about the gambling law previously in Burundi. According to a Penal Code from 2008, it’s illegal. But contradictory to that, there is a national lottery in Burundi called the LONA. The state-owned Burundi National Lottery Commission regulates this lottery.

But despite there being a national lottery, online lottery casinos are not legal. But as we said before, that hasn’t stopped the players from enjoying it, nor are they facing any problems.

Since online casinos aren’t regulated in the country, something like international casinos is legal in Burundi. Gamblers can access online casinos without getting into trouble with the law.

The Burundi National Lottery owns a casino in the capital city, Bujumbura. The Lydia Ludic casino has been there since 2001 and is the only one with permission to operate in the country. Calling it a casino is also a stretch since it offers only a handful of slots.

As we’ve mentioned, the internet penetration rate is only 14.6%, one of the lowest in the world. With that in mind, we don’t think online gambling will ever have a future in the country. When more than half of the population is not on the internet, how can you expect the country to have a future?

But since online gambling is not regulated, it doesn’t matter if it’s legal. A fact many gamblers in the country are using that. They are free to visit the online betting sites if it accepts players from Burundi.
