Like many EU countries, Czechia (also known as the Czech Republic) has a very permissive stance on gambling. As a result, most forms of offline and online gambling are legal in the country. However, there is an interesting twist you should be aware of. Please find out more in our overview of gambling laws in Czechia below.

Gambling regulations in czechia

Two main laws outline Czechia's gambling regulations: the 1990 Law on Lotteries and Other Like Games, which made most forms of offline gambling plus online lotteries and sports betting legal in the country, and the 2016 Gambling Act, which legalized all other forms of online gambling.

What makes this country stand out more than others in the EU is the fact that locally licensed online casinos have a raft of restrictions to abide by, such as requiring players to verify their identity in person at an approved location and not offering any bonuses, including casino welcome bonus offers and free spins. Let's explore the legal situation in the Czech Republic regarding each gambling activity.

Casino Games

Land-based casino gaming is legal in Czechia and has been since 1990, with all operators offering such services required to hold a licence issued by the Ministry of Finance. Most venues are casinos that form part of a larger resort or complex and are usually located in the country's capital, Prague.

Online casino gaming has been legal in the Czech Republic since 2016, with operators again required to obtain a licence. However, in this country, residents who wish to play games such as online casino slots, Blackjack, Roulette and Poker must verify their identity in person. In addition, licensed online operators are not permitted to offer any bonuses, free spins or any other incentive to players.

As a result, very few companies currently hold a licence to operate in the country. At the same time, players have little trouble accessing the more attractive offers and easier identity verification of foreign online casinos.

Poker

Poker games are legal and can only be found at licensed casinos in the Czech Republic, with no standalone poker halls operating in the country. Casinos offer poker tables to their patrons just like various other card games.

Online poker is also legal in Czechia. However, the licensing criteria are so prohibitive that very few residents play at sites licensed in the country, instead preferring to play poker games at one of the many foreign online casinos.

Bingo

While bingo games are legal in Czechia and have been since 1990, it's not well known and, therefore, not played very much. Licensed casinos run the occasional bingo event, but the game is not as popular as in some other countries, e.g. the UK.

Online bingo gambling is also legal in the country, but no locally licensed websites currently offer the game. Czech residents tend to get their bingo gaming fun at one of the online bingo sites that currently operate and accept players from the country.

Lotteries

Lottery games have been legal in Czechia since 1948, and playing the lottery is a popular pastime. The country is one of only a few in Europe that allows multiple companies to offer lottery products to its residents rather than running a monopoly by state-owned operator Sazka. Many local retailers sell lottery tickets, scratch cards, and keno game tickets.

Online lottery games are also legal in the Czech Republic, with residents able to play online lottery games for real money either through existing licensed retailers' websites or foreign online lottery sites.

Free online casinos - sites that allow you to play online slots and other casino games with play chips - are unregulated and not specifically mentioned in the Czech Republic's gambling laws. Loot boxes and skins gambling are also currently unregulated.

Although Bitcoin is legal in Czechia, the country does not recognize the coin as a legal currency, and as such, no offline or online venues accept the cryptocurrency. That leaves residents with only one option: accessing foreign online Bitcoin casinos to play games with the cryptocurrency.

Sportsbet laws

Betting on sports is legal in Czechia. Five companies are licensed to operate within the country via various sportsbooks and betting shops: Sazka, Synot Tip, Chance, Fortuna and Tipsport. Horse racing betting is also legal in the country, with the existing sports betting licence covering the activity.

Online sports betting is legal in the Czech Republic. Still, once again, residents find the few online sites' conditions very restrictive and unattractive (i.e. in-person identity verification, no available bonuses). Instead, many residents prefer to get their sports betting action via the many foreign online sportsbooks that accept Czech members.

The legal gambling age in the Czech Republic is 18, which means you must be this age or over toto enter gambling venues or participate in gambling online.

Tax Regulation

Czechia gambling tax regulation means licensed operators must pay a basic gambling tax rate of 23%, which rises to 35% for operators that offer gambling machines or lotteries. Operators are also required to pay a corporate tax of 19%.

Players are charged tax on their winnings (minus their stake) as income at 15%. The same rate applies to raffle and lottery winnings exceeding 1 million Czech Koruna (about €42,000).

The earliest record of any gambling regulation in Czechia dates back to 1355 when Emperor Charles IV restricted gambling for money in the Maiestas Carolina (legal code). Licensing establishments offering lotteries and other forms of gambling in the country were mentioned as far back as the 18th century. Between the first and second wars, slot machines were manufactured in abundance in what was then known as Czechoslovakia. During the communist period, only state-sanctioned lottery games and sports betting were allowed.

Casinos and gaming machines were legalized in 1990 with the Law on Lotteries and Other Like Games, with a 2012 amendment making online lotteries and sports betting legal, too. In 2016, the Gambling Act legalized all forms of online gambling in the country.
